Step 1: Remove Old Nailhead Trim.
First, there are nails every four to five spaces that will need to be removed. Begin by taking pliers and pull out the nails to remove the old trim. Then continue to get all the trim that you will be replacing. It should come off in one long piece. Since the piece can get longer and start to curl, be careful of sharp edges.
Step 2: Measure your fabric
Of course, selecting material for a french inspired furniture piece may be the hardest part of this project. Besides, once you are hooked on a specific style, you will end up using the fabric in other projects.
Since this chair didn’t come off like a typical seat cover, I placed the new fabric over the existing fabric. After that, I folded back the material to match the contour of the chair.
This step in the repurposing process takes more time for this reason you don’t need to be perfect. The nailhead trim will cover over the seam when you finish the project.
Again, make sure the staple is not sticking out like this one.
Step 3: Trim the fabric
Actually, tucking the material technique was proving to be too difficult because of the oval shape of the chair. So, trimming the material to the actual size was the better solution for this part of the process.
I think at this point you will want to step back and make sure that your fabric is in line with the chair contour. Also, check that the staples are also flush with the wood.
If there are any fraying edges of the fabric, then cut them off before applying the nailhead trim.
Step 4: Unravel Nailhead Trim and cut excess
Adding nailhead trim is the perfect extravagance to add a french flair to any chair. Of course, we are fans but if you are new to french inspired furniture characteristics, then watch this video.
- Nailhead trim adds quality to any piece of furniture.
- Trim comes in a variety of finishes.
- The nailhead secures the fabric edges.
- It holds the fabric into place and hides the staples.
Since this chair had nailhead trim, I felt that it was worth the effort to learn how to do this furniture upgrade.
Furthermore, you can purchase nailhead trim at a local craft store or click here to have it shipped to your home.
Step 5: Gather these tools
- First, use cutting pliers to slice through the metal when you are done with a trim section.
- Second, hold the nail with needle-nose pliers then hammer in the nail. While it may take you a few tries, you will not bend the head of the nail.
- Last, using a smaller hammer is helpful since the chair wood isn’t massive. In other words, you don’t want to leave a mark on the wood.
Step 6: Shape the trim
For one thing, this takes some time and patience to go around the edges of the armrest. Bending the nail trim is easy but keeping it in place while nailing proves to be more difficult.
Step 7: Practice makes perfect.
As it happens, I must share this with you so you can laugh. Because I did waste a bunch of nails before I held them with the needle-nose pliers, I only had three nails left.
Take a lesson from me: Use the pliers to hold the nail in place. As I said, this was more difficult than I did anticipate but I’m very happy with the end product.
Step 8: Sit down and enjoy your work
Finally, sitting in your new chair is your reward. As always, repurposing a french inspired furniture pieces looks so amazing. Of course, the hard part is deciding which room it will brighten!
