Are you ready for some football? How about a DIY hat to go with it?
I am a huge fan of the Steelers! I was born and bred near Pittsburgh, PA and you can’t help but be a fan. When the leaves on the trees start changing and the days get shorter, this Pennsylvania Girl has a checklist to get ready for the season and I guarantee I will tell you how you can make a DIY hat and get compliments at a Steeler game (or your favorite team).
Here is my checklist but take special note of the last item:
- Store Summer clothes in bins
- Hang Fall Clothes in my closet
- Transition the summer potting plants to Fall Mums.
- Get the canning tools ready to preserve the fruits of our garden.
- Start searching to see how many ways I can use pumpkin in the kitchen.
- Get out my bedazzled Terrible Towel and the winter hats
I love hats. I’ve collected them since I was a little girl.
Chances are, if someone in your life crochets or knits, you have received one of the following gifts: blankets, scarves, socks, or hats.
My granny crochets and I have several pieces that I treasure. But last year I had a very special request for her: a DIY hat.
Our good friends who own the local Bed & Breakfast, Country Seasons, had invited us to attend an NFL game with them. My husband and I were very excited to see the Steelers play in person and I started planning the outfit that I would wear. I’m one of those fans that likes to look the part when I attend a game in person or when watching in the comfort of my home.
I asked my Granny for a black and gold crochet DIY hat. I knew that it was going to be cold and I wanted my hat to look cute. When she gave it to me it was nice, but my philosophy is that a girl has to stand out, not just blend in to a crowd so I went to Joann Fabric for some bling and bought black and gold trim that I weaved through the crochet pattern.
As I walked into Heinz Field, I saw several NFL merchandise stands selling hats and other Steeler items, but I loved my custom one-of-kind DIY hat and was very happy to wear it as I cheered on the hometown team.
Before I even made it to my seat, I had been asked several times where I got my hat. I was so excited and very pleased that my granny had made me the hat and she enjoyed my call during half time as I gave her the compliment (being from Pittsburgh, she is naturally a big Steeler fan too). I think I’m going to expand my bedazzled collection this year and ask for a black and gold scarf to go with the hat. The fleece hat is great but I do love a matching set.
If you love your team and you want to show your support, get someone to crochet you a hat and and add some extra flair for your own personal touches.
