Custom Entertainment Stand

Here was the dilemma.   In reality, I needed a custom entertainment stand.

I had an idea in my head for one piece of furniture to magically be the catch-all entertainment stand in our dining room.  The beautiful striped wall in the dining room needed something to complete the space.   I had high expectations for the piece that I was searching for that would complete our dining room and I just couldn’t find it so……..I enlisted the left brain and we built our own entertainment stand.

The list was long for my custom entertainment piece:

  • A multipurpose stand
  • A place to store the extra leaves to the stenciled dining room table and the French-inspired bottles that I love to serve drinks in during parties
  • Another surface to display and serve drinks
  • A small furniture piece to feature the Fusion Paint that I got in a swag bag at the Haven Conference. It just so happened that the colors in my bag were the perfect complement to my existing dining room color palette.

I wanted to keep the French theme with this custom piece so I asked my 93 year old grandmother if she had any vintage luggage.  Grandma Judy had the perfect piece and with her blessing I painted the exterior with Lamp White and Bedford Fusion Mineral Paint.  The metal locks were updated with Damask Fusion Mineral Paint.  I took a vintage frame and I custom painted a picture to combine the colors from my Fusion paint package.  As an added bonus, I used Osborne Wood corbels painted in Damask and a white board stand, also found in my Haven swag bag, as anchor pieces for the entertainment stand.

The furniture piece needed to be two levels so I went to my first estate sale and bought another piece of vintage luggage which matched my grandmothers suitcase (I was thrilled!!!).  After painting it, the left brain went to work and built a wooden stand that would anchor the luggage which would allow enough space to open them to store items, but high enough to use if closed.  He also custom designed the top shelf to be wider to accommodate storing and displaying the leaves to the stenciled dining room table.

To top off the French-inspired look, we used decorative metal rods from Home Depot (which were intended for staircases) but we used them for the legs of our custom furniture piece and attached glass door pulls on the bottom to tie in other design features from the dining room.

This piece adds a touch of elegance to the space but I’m most excited that it checked off all the boxes on my wish list.

Sometimes you can’t find the right tool or in this case, furniture piece, for the job so…….build your own.  I hope you enjoyed this project.  For more ideas, sign up for our reminder for future posts.

Special thanks to Fusion Paint and Osborne Wood for supplying the paint and corbels for this post.
